This document highlights the opportunity for the oil and gas industry to contribute to Indonesia’s faster achievement of net-zero emissions targets through effective methane emissions management. The commitment to net-zero emissions by 2060 necessitates strong policies. The energy sector, particularly oil and gas, is a substantial emitter of greenhouse gases. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas with 84 times the heat-trapping capacity of CO2, demands careful control to prevent atmospheric release. In the UN’s CO2 equivalent calculation, methane is 28 times more impactful.

Methane poses a significant threat to climate change, but effectively managing and minimizing its emissions offers a rapid path to net-zero emissions, both for the government and industry players. The UN spearheads a multi-stakeholder partnership involving oil and gas companies, international organizations, governments, and NGOs to enhance methane measurements and reporting in the sector. The UN provides guidelines for identifying, managing, and reducing methane emissions. Participating companies benefit from operational efficiency improvements, mitigation strategies, and better access to finance with stringent sustainability requirements.

The discussion panel will delve into strategies that can expedite Indonesia’s net-zero commitments, including investments in CCS/CCUS and practical approaches like Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) to address both intended and unintended methane sources. The event is scheduled for September 14, 2023, in Jakarta and online. Distinguished panelists such as Dr. Mirza Mahendra, Hakimul Batih, and Giulia Ferrini will provide insights, moderated by Moshe Rizal.
